Jannik Sinner, the world’s No. 1 tennis player, clinched his second Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open, defeating Taylor Fritz in a thrilling final. This victory marked a remarkable comeback for Sinner, who faced significant challenges leading up to the tournament.
Sinner became the third man in the Open Era to claim his first two Grand Slam titles in the same season. Some of the best players in history including Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, and Andre Agassi did not win their first two majors in the same season. The last player who did was Guillermo Vilas, who emerged victorious at Roland Garros and the US Open in 1977.
Just weeks before the U.S. Open began, Sinner was unexpectedly exonerated in a doping case that had remained undisclosed until the tournament’s commencement.
The world No.1, that job was to become the US Open champion — he did that after a no-sweat 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 win over American Taylor Fritz in the final.
Jannik Sinner got emotional as he dedicated his US Open title to his ailing aunt during the presentation ceremony. “I also realize off the court there is life. I would like to dedicate this title to my aunt. She is not feeling well health-wise. I don’t know how much longer I’ll have her in my life. It’s so nice that I can share positive moments with her still. She is a very important person in my life. If that would be my one biggest wish, I wish the best of health for everyone. Unfortunately, it’s not possible.”
Aryna Sabalenka beats Jessica Pegula to win US Open women’s final:
Aryna Sabalenka clinched her third Grand Slam title on Sunday, defeating Jessica Pegula in straight sets, 7-5 7-5. It was a moment of redemption for the current world no. 2. Having retained her title at the Australian Open, she sustained a back injury in Rome and also exited in the Roland Garros quarter-final due to illness. Meanwhile, she also missed Wimbledon due to her injury.
Finishing the match in style, the athlete from Belarus triumphed 7-5, 7-5 to lift her maiden US Open title. Little did she know, however, that a special gift awaited her alongside her Flushing Meadows glory. In a pleasant twist to the celebration, WWE presented Sabalenka with a championship belt to honor her incredible achievement.
