Paris 2024 Olympics : All you need to know

The 2024 Olympics in Paris is set to be the largest event ever organized in France and is scheduled to be held from July 26 to August 11.

The 2024 Olympics get underway in Paris, France in less than two weeks. It is the third time the French capital has hosted the Summer Games, the first being in 1900 and the second in 1924, exactly 100 years ago.

What’s new in the Paris Olympics 2024?

  • For the first time, this year’s Paris Olympics will have an equal number of male and female athletes and the same number of events for all.
  • Millions of spectators will attend in person, filling 35 venues in and around Paris. At the same time, 10,500 athletes from over 200 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and the IOC Refugee Olympic Team will compete in 329 events over 19 days.
  • For the first time in history, the Summer Games won’t kick off in a stadium but instead on a river.
  • This Olympics edition will feature 36 sports, including four additional breaking, sport climbing, skateboarding, and surfing ones introduced to enhance the program and engage youth.

What Could go wrong?

  • On June 24 rehearsal was canceled due to strong currents in the Seine. Ongoing concerns about water quality persist ahead of the 2024 Olympics, where open-water swimming events are planned.
  • Most notable concerns are the security concerns, which have increased in the months leading up to the Opening Ceremony, amid a resurgence of attacks by extremist Islamist groups across Europe.

How many sports are there in the 2024 Paris Olympics?

There will be 32 different sports contested at the Paris Olympics. This includes 28 mandatory ‘core’ sports plus a maximum of six optional sports, decided by the hosts.

Paris opted for breakdancing (breaking), which will be making its Olympic debut, along with skateboarding, sporting climbing and surfing. The latter three made their debuts at Tokyo 2020.

What is special about this year’s Olympic medal?

This summer’s Olympics will mark 100 years since the last Games were hosted in Paris. To celebrate the return of the Games to France, each Olympic medal is embellished with an original iron piece of the Eiffel Tower.

The Eiffel Tower has also inspired the unique design of the ribbons for the medals, each adorned with the latticework of the famous landmark.

Paris jewelry house Chaumet designed the medals. Around the iron pieces of the Eiffel Tower are disks of gold, silver, or bronze. The shine of the medals comes from the crinkled effect on the disks. Games organizers say the metal is recycled, not newly minted.
