Copa America 2024: Colombia outlasts Uruguay to reach final vs. Lionel Messi, Argentina

Colombia secured a 1-0 victory against Uruguay in the Copa America semifinal on Wednesday, despite being reduced to 10 men in the second half.

Colombia ended their 23-year-long wait for a major tournament final as they defeated Uruguay 1-0 in an entertaining semi-final of Copa America 2024. Colombia will face Lionel Messi’s Argentina, the defending Copa America and World Cup champions, on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Summary of the Uruguay vs Colombia :

Uruguay had two close chances to score, with Nunez missing the target by an inch and another shot whizzing past the upright.

After That, James Rodriguez provided his sixth assist of the tournament with a corner that Jefferson Lerma headed in, breaking Lionel Messi’s record for most assists in a single Copa America campaign.

Daniel Munoz received a second yellow card, reducing Colombia to 10 men.

Suarez hit the upright, and Uribe missed a perfect chance to double the lead. The Uruguayan keeper saved Uribe’s strike, which rebounded off the crossbar. Colombia celebrated their victory and will face Argentina in the Copa America 2024 final.

Colombia extends unbeaten streak

Colombia is on a 28-game unbeaten streak, with 22 wins and six draws. Their last defeat was in February 2022 against Argentina, the same team they’ll face in Sunday’s final.

Third Copa America final for Colombia

Colombia has reached the Copa America final for the third time in history. They previously lost to Peru in 1975 and defeated Mexico in 2001 on home soil.

Uruguay star loses his cool and throws punches at fans in a massive brawl during the Copa America

After the final whistle, tonight’s game ended badly when Uruguayan players, including Darwin Nunez, clashed with Colombian fans. Altercations broke out in the Bank of America Stadium stands, involving players like Ronald Araujo and Jose Maria Gimenez. The video showed fans throwing objects, leading to police intervention. Nunez was visibly shaken and consoled by Luis Suarez on the pitch.

Now it’s time for 15-time champs vs 1-time champs :

So Sunday’s final in Miami will feature the defending champions Argentina taking on Colombia.

Argentina and Colombia met in the semifinals of the last edition of Copa America in 2021, with Argentina winning 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Massive Blow For Colombia :

Colombia will have to face Argentina without one of their key players: Daniel Munoz. Munoz’s red card against Uruguay means he will miss the final through suspension. This is a huge blow, considering his significant contributions both in attack (two goals and an assist in Copa America) and defensively.
